Hello Brothers and Sisters,
I am writing you for a very simple reason actually.  The fact is that I wish to join your group...I am 32 years of age.  The reasons are many, but basically, I am a man that does not believe that our lives are meant to do anything more than to prepare for eternity with the Almighty.  I have gone through many years of contemplation on this concept...that all other outside influences would be secondary to the Lord and in being part of a group that feels the same...many that say they are trying to do this appear to my heart as serving two masters.  I...have a great hunger for learning things that involve becoming closer to Jesus.  If you believe that you need a soul that is willing to devote their lives to Jesus and be in constant service, please respond to this letter...I have a deep desire to...learn these things; not for money, but for the love of the Almighty.     Rob

Reply from The Prayer Foundation At this time we are compiling a "waiting list" of those who would like to be a part of a forthcoming move and expansion of our community.  We are hoping that we will be able to maintain a balance of about 50/50 men and women.  Those interested in further information on this subject  should go to our page: Joining our Portland Monastery. That page has much information, and will lead you to many other pages that will help answer your questions (also see several letters further below asking the same questions that you might have).

Note: Rob requested an e-mailed reply but the e-mail address we received from him could not accept return mail.  Please make certain your e-mail address is correct, and that you are set up to receive e-mails if you are requesting an e-mailed response.

Dear Monks,
In ** another team will be leaving for China.  I will not be going this trip.  This trip will include ** veterans and ** new English teachers (evangelists).

Please pray for the following:
Good health for the team members.  Entry (customs) into China to go smoothly.  Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit to know what He wants the team to do and say.  For courage and wisdom to carry out what the Holy Spirit tells the team.  Safety for the family members left behind.  That there will be no baggage lost during plain transfers.  Safety and harmony between the team members and that the new team members with submit to the leading and guidance of the veteran team leader.  That their reentry in to the U.S.A. will go smoothly.  Reentry was not easy for me.
** was introduced to English teaching in China and felt the call.  When upon **'s return to the U.S.A., ** applied for a position as an English teacher in China.  The application was eagerly accepted.  ** has sold a thriving business, and is now in China starting a new career.
The door to the heart of China is open for almost anyone who is
willing to pay the price and can teach basic English skills.
                                                                                                                        Yours truly,

Monk William (California)

Greetings to you in the name of Christ!  I came across your web site online and read about the lay monastic journey spoken of.  I was curious if you're still doing this, and if so, if there is any room for those interested in it?  I'm very interested in the monastic life and would really like to talk to you about it more.  I'll leave it at that until I hear back from you. Thanks so much!                                                                  Peace of Christ to you,                                                                            ~Ron

I would appreciate it if you could be kind enough to inform me on how I can get a copy of the video Masada.
Any cost involved will be forwarded to you upon your information.
With thanks,
Ashley Campbell (Western Australia)

Reply from The Prayer Foundation Masada is one of the many Movies, DVDs, Books, Audio Books, and CDs that we make available to those who wish to contribute financially to this ministry, thereby making its existence possible.  For a listing of what's available, see our page: Gifts for Contributors!

Over the past few days I have been looking up the schedules of monasteries and I've learned about the Worship Hours they keep:

Nocturns; Vigils; Matins; Laudes; Sext; None; Vespers; Compline.

Out of curiosity do you guys keep the same hours?  What is your monastery's daily schedule?
Adrienne W.

We are a relatively new monastery, and still in our formative stages.  We are currently planning to purchase country acreage for our goals of larger monastery, public gardens, and retreat center (see our pages: Our Goals).  So we do not yet have the formal schedule that we will at that time.  A pastiche of a "typical" day (but really every day is different) including a time schedule, can be found on our page: Open Letter: Monk Prayer Life

Another very "untypical" monastery who's web site you might enjoy looking at is Jesus Abbey in Korea.  It was founded over forty years ago by the descendants of Christian evangelist and author R.A. Torrey ("The Power of Prayer").  He was Dwight L. Moody's choice to head up the then new Moody Bible Institute (and Torrey later became Moody's replacement as evangelist, when Moody went home to be with the Lord) Like us, Jesus Abbey allows married persons.   Also like us, they are born-again Evangelicals.  They are affiliated with the Episcopal Church. _____________________________________________________________
