To answer your questions in the order you ask them:

1.) How do you become a monk?                                                         Becoming a Monk: Go to our page: Joining our Portland Monastery.  This describes the four different levels of monastic involvement that are now or soon will be available through this ministry, and what is involved in each.  It will also show you many related "links" on our site for more information.

2.) As a monk what are your duties, job responsibilities?                            A. You can be a "Lay" monk in your own home (see our page: Monk Certificate & Card).                                                                                        B. You can be part of the "Affiliated Community" (see Lay Monastic Community, Portland, Oregon) and go to College or full-time work of your own choosing.                                                                                                       C. Temporary Monasticism: for a month, a Semester or Quarter, or a year.  Experience the monastic lifestyle and grow in prayer and in your Christian walk.                                                                           D. Permanent Staff in the main Community in Portland, Oregon: Prayer and religious services several times a day; Bible study classes.  Work involves whatever needs to be done: gardening, building repair, cleaning, kitchen help.  Assigned duties are rotated.  Currently our Monks all support themselves and contribute to the costs of the Community; that can involve a part-time job two days a week. One afternoon a week we may go street witnessing.

3.) Where are locations in the U.S.A. and specifically the state of N.J. where you can be trained to become a monk?                                              We are just beginning a Born-again Christian Monastery here in Portland, Oregon.  We hope to aquire country acreage sometime in the next year.  There are currently no locations anywhere else.
We do, however, have a free monastic training course posted on our site that you can go through at home (see: Growing In Christ and Memory Verses).  Pray for us and for our worldwide Prayer Encouragement ministry.  For this Prayer Teaching and Resources web site.

4.) As a Christian monk, how do you join the monastery?                       How to join our monastery: We are not accepting postulants (new monks) in the monastery at this time, but are taking applications: If you want to be placed on a tentative waiting list (no commitment at this time is necessary), you should e-mail us telling us about yourself with an accompanying photo: age, history, Christian History/background, education level, job training, hobbies, interests, why do you want to be a monk?, why with our ministry?, any special medical needs or problems.

(Also, you might want to look at the e-mail posted below, and two more e-mails on the same subject which are posted on our page: Your Comments - Page 22: 1/19/03 -1/24/03!)

Dear Knights of Prayer ™,
I am a 20 year-old born again Christian male from the United Kingdom.  I am about to start my training at university as a student nurse.
The reason I am e-mailing you is to ask a few questions, if I may?
1.) When I finish my training as a nurse may it still be possible to join such a blessed ministry as yours?
2.) If for instance I am married (of course to a born again Christian female) is that acceptable to you?
3.) - Are there any Knights of Prayer ministries around my area (London - U. K.)?

I would appreciate any more information that you could give me, and prayer for the Lord to guide me the way that he sees fit.
Thank you so much for your time.
God Bless.
Shaun S. (United Kingdom)

Reply from The Prayer Foundation :                                                      1.) When I finish my training as a nurse may it still be possible to join such a blessed ministry as yours?                                                                Yes, it will still be possible join our ministry after you finish your schooling.  Our founders, Monk Preston and Monk Linda, are both called and committed to this ministry for life (they do not require such a commitment from anyone else).                                                                    2.) If for instance I am married (of course to a born again Christian female) is that acceptable to you?                                                             Yes, we allow married monks.  In this we agree with Celtic Christian practice, which (for at least three hundred years) also allowed married monks.  Monk Preston and Monk Linda are themselves a married couple.                                                                                                             3.) - Are there any Knights of Prayer ministries around my area (London - U. K.)?
We are still a very new ministry, founded in Portland, Oregon; at this time there are no Knights of Prayer ministries in or near London in the U.K.  However, that could change at any time if someone is interested in being involved in beginning one.

We are happy to pray for you, and will put you on a list of persons with an interest in the possibility of being involved with this ministry.

For more information that may answer questions you have, go to our pages: Open Letter: Why We're Monks, Lay Monastic Community: Portland, Oregon, Our GoalsThese pages will lead you to other related pages on our site.  Also feel free to e-mail us at any time with any further questions that you may still have.

(And you may also want to take a look at the next two letters which are posted on Your Comments - Page 22: 1/19/03 -1/24/03!).
