Our Night of Prayer

"Our purpose was to petition the Lord for the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and accompanying power of The Holy Spirit, for the ministry that God has called us to."

The night of Feb. 17 through the morning of Feb. 18 (the sun rose at 7:07 A.M.) was a turning point for this ministry.  We had a Communion Service, and then spent the night in prayer.  To do this has been on our hearts for several months, now.  Our purpose was to petition the Lord for the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and accompanying power of the Holy Spirit, for the ministry that God has called us to.  Also we were petitioning God about a country property suitable for a larger permanent monastery/public gardens/retreat center, to be able to fulfill the ministry that we feel He has called us to.

Please Pray Right Now With Us for The Above Requests: God Answers the Prayers of His People

If God does not take care of these things, they simply will not happen.

We have a ministry policy of not asking for donations/contributions, but only going to God for all things, so we are utterly dependent upon God in all of these areas.  If God does not take care of these things, they simply will not happen.   We also spent some of the time in Scripture reading and also with some reading from the book, L'Abri by Edith Schaeffer.  We read daily from the Bible and inspirational Christian books, and it so happened that on this particular evening the next portion we were to read was from the early part of L'Abri).

Our Lord Jesus spent the night in prayer...

Our Lord Jesus spent the entire night in prayer before choosing his disciples.  In the Bible the first recorded instance of this was of Jacob's night of "wrestling with God." (Genesis 32:22-31).  Jacob was fleeing his Father-in-Law, Laban, and about to enter the territory of his brother Esau, who, when last seen many years before, had wanted to kill Jacob.  Jacob was concerned about the safety of his family.

Jacob's life was transformed...

Jacob's life was transformed, and he was a different man from then on, relying on God rather than on himself.  In fact, that was the night that God gave Jacob a new name: Israel.

We are Inspired by the Lives and Ministry of Francis & Edith Schaeffer

This is God's ministry, not ours.

So it was our desire to seek God.  This is God's ministry, not ours.  It is to God that we must look both for guidance and for provision.  As Edith Schaeffer is shown pointing out in the book, L'Abri:

...an excitement to see what "God will do."

"We were going back with an expectation of something rather special, with an excitement to see what "God will do".  We has done quite a lot of thinking and self-examining over the past few years.  It seemed to us that so much of Christianity was being spread by advertising designed to "put across" something, and that there was very little recognition of the existence of the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit.  One morning at Chalet Bijou's breakfast table, Fran had said to me, 'Supposing we had awakened today to find everything concerning the Holy Spirit and prayer removed from the Bible--that is, not removed the way liberals would remove it, but that God had somehow really removed everything about prayer and the Holy Spirit from the Bible.

Where does the supernatural power of God have a real place?'

What difference would it make practically between the way we worked yesterday, and the way we would work today, and tomorrow?  What difference would it make in the majority of Christians' practical work and plans.  Aren't most plans laid out ahead of time?  Isn't much work done by human talent, energy, and clever ideas?  Where does the supernatural power of God have a real place?'

Challenged by this, we began to think and look over our own lives and work...and, we asked God to give us something more real in our work of the future."

God was also "speaking" to our hearts the same verses that he had used to "speak" to Edith Schaeffer...

Was it just coincidence that our daily reading fell at this portion of the book, L'Abri?  We don't think so.  As we continued to read, about a Chapter later, we felt that God was also "speaking" to our hearts the same verses that he had used to "speak" to Edith Schaeffer's heart so many years ago in early 1955, when their ministry was still in its beginning, formative stages.

"One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five ye shall flee; till ye be left as a beacon on the top of a mountain;...and therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you...blessed are all they that wait for him...thou shalt weep no more; he will be very gracious unto thee at the voice of they cry, when he shall hear it, he will answer thee...And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left...ye shall have a song as in the night when a Holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart..."

...I was filled with a warmth of expectancy and faith that God was going to guide us...

"As I read, the cold, sick, depressed feeling left me, and I was filled with a warmth of expectancy and faith that God was going to guide us, and that He could do the impossible and that He would show us the "way".  I felt a surge of thankfulness to Him for giving us an opportunity to really see Him work, and I prayed, "Oh Heavenly Father, please show us today something of Thy power.  Give us a sign of the fact that Thou art hearing us as we pray concerning this whole thing.""
