[Back]The Letter we Received:

I am doing a school project about Beijing and need to find and contact a missionary from China.  I was wondering if you could provide me with an e-mail address for someone, preferably home on furlough, who would be able to tell me more about the country as well as what ministry they are involved in.  If they are currently in the field, please let me know if their ministry is done in secret or not.  I don't want to ruin anything for them.  I know that you are a prayer Foundation, but I would greatly appreciate any help you could provide.  One last thing, I would like to obtain the Hudson Taylor book.                                                                           Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.                                 Yvonne

[Back]Reply from The Prayer Foundation:

After the Communists took over China, they ordered all missionaries to leave the country.  All of the evangelism done in China by individuals from other countries is done secretly and with a certain amount of risk.  Chinese Christians who evangelize experience extreme risk.  Our policy is never to give out any e-mail addresses because Chinese Christians are daily in danger of suffering imprisonment, torture, and even execution if they do not obey the many laws limiting the practice of their faith.

See our page: Monk William in China, and other information on China listed on our: China Pages.  Also see the "China" information our page: Worldwide Persecution of Christians.  As far as persecution of Christians in Beijing, see our page: Open Letter: Church in China.

Information on how to obtain the book, Hudson Taylor: Founder, China Inland Mission, can be found on our page: Gifts for Contributors, under the Category: Books (Printed).

[Back]Letter From Monk William to The Prayer Foundation:

Dear Monks,
I am aware of your e-mail address policy and consider it wise under
the present dangers.
I do know of a few missionaries in China.  Most are working as
teachers in Chinese schools.  And all are clandestine.
Oh yes, the Chinese authorities know who they are and they are watched closely.  But some of them have made such major positive contribution to the well-being of the communities that they are left in peace.
People are allowed to believe in what ever they want to believe in
as long as they are not breaking the rules
(
Note from The Prayer Foundation : like telling others about Jesus , having a prayer meeting or Bible study in your home, or anything outside of the State-authorized "church").
Sad to say that at least one "missionary" is in my opinion, beating
her/his own drum without regard for the safety of our brothers and
sisters.  If I was proven wrong in this judgment, I would be
overjoyed.
There are many reasons Americans choose to work as teachers in China.  I know of one who is there as a retired teacher and can live in
relative ease on his pension.  There are hundreds of American English
teachers in China motivated by a variety of reasons.
To my knowledge, I know of no missionary organization operating
a ministry on the mainland.
Brother Andrew's information on the Chinese government sponsored
church agrees with what I know of them.  And yes, we have some very
dear and strong pastors working within the rules set down for them to
follow.  Let us continue to support them in our prayers for China.
They may not be able to operate Sunday Schools as we know them, but
they teach parents to hold their own Sunday Schools and often provide
materials out of their own pockets.  They can walk to the wall, so to
speak, and leave goods in reach for those on the other side.
                                                                                                                       Yours truly,
Monk William (California)

[Back]Letter From Monk William to Yvonne:

Dear Yvonne,
For several years I have been acquainted with and have worked with a
very kind
**** who travels twice a year to China to talk with English
students, help out in an
****, cultivate relationships, and
share the story of Jesus.  We have invested much of our resources in
this "ministry".  With out a doubt, this is a labor of love, but it
is not without some risk and danger.
I know of many "Missionary" English teachers who live and work with
the Chinese people, and who have a heart and love for the Gospel
story.  But I know of no official missionary organization that works
full-time within the Chinese mainland.  There may just be, but I do
not know of them.
One must travel overseas to understand the vast difference culture
makes on the way we see the world.  And at the same time, how we as
people are alike in many way.  There are billions of people in China
and each of them sees the world through their own eyes, just like you.
I have only been to China once and have never been to Beijing.  My
sojourn was in the
**** part of China.  I came away with
quite a few good friends among the people I met there, and I long to
return to visit them soon.
Yvonne, I don't know if this information will help you with your
project or not.  But I hope you will find it somewhat helpful.
                                                                                                               Yours truly,
Monk William (California)

[Back]Information on China from Open Doors (Brother Andrew):

Yes, the Chinese government allows Amity Press to print Bibles, but not nearly enough Bibles are printed to meet the demand. Amity Printing in Nanjing produces about 2 million Bibles a year, and those Bibles are sold through two avenues: the official “Three-Self Church,” which is a government-controlled institution, and government sponsored bookstores in some of the large cities.

Many of the pastors of the Three-Self Churches are men of God, and have a real love for our Lord. However, the government regulates what the pastor can preach on and sets strict guidelines for them to follow. For example, they cannot teach youth under 18 about the Lord, and they must abstain from preaching on certain important Biblical topics. They are also not allowed to operate freely outside the perimeter of the Church grounds.

Many Chinese Christians do not attend the Three Self Church for these reasons. The majority of Chinese Christians do not live in the large cities where Bibles are available, and they do not have the money to purchase their own copy of God’s Word. The expense of traveling to the cities and purchasing a Bible is far beyond the ability of a Chinese peasant family, which must live on 1000 yuan ($100) or less, per year.

By taking advantage of every avenue to assist the whole church in China through Bible deliveries, leadership training, prayer support and encouragement, Open Doors seeks to support the continued, solid growth of the world’s largest revival. Currently it is estimated that between 10,000-25,000 people come to know Christ every day in China.

[Back]China Prayer Suggestions from Open Doors:

  • Pray for the evangelists who travel around the countryside. They are usually on the run from the police and risk their lives to take the Gospel to the most remote places.

  • Pray for Christian prisoners and their families. The conditions in Chinese labor camps are severe. Pray that God will protect their health and use them as a witness to their fellow inmates.

  • Pray that more and more Chinese believers will be trained to teach God's Word and therefore combat false teaching.

  • Pray for the Sunday School teachers. That they will be able to carry on their work without harassment or arrest.
