He believed that even the worst evils could be overcome.

"The wittiest and most religious man in all of England," he was called.  But the issues he dealt with were not amusing, and he pursued his world-changing political mission not from a religious ivory tower but in the messy world of brutal political struggle.  

Slavery was taken for granted in 18th-century Britain--the leading slave-trade nation in Europe.  The British shipped 70,000 men, women, and children per year to the slave plantations.  It was a very profitable business and provided major underpinning for the British economy.
