1761-1834 William Carey is known as "The Founder of Modern Missions." Following his work in India, the great wave of Missionaries of the 1800's set forth worldwide. He also was given the title, "Friend of India" for his help in abolishing the custom of Sati--where a widow was burned alive on her husband's funeral pyre. His example in going to India and translating Scripture into more new versions of the Bible than had been done in all Christian History combined. _________________ © 1998, Christian History Institute. He oversaw more translations of the Bible than had been produced in all previous Christian history combined. "Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God." -William Carey "Prayer -- secret fervent believing prayer -- lies at the root of all personal godliness. A competent knowledge of the language where a missionary lives, a mild and winning temper, a heart given up to God in closet religion -- these, these are the attainments which, more than all knowledge, or all other gifts, will fit us to become the instruments of God in the great work of human redemption." -Carrey's Brotherhood, Serampore
...the revered "Friend of India" and "Father of Modern Missions." He sailed in 1793 to India with a reluctant wife and four children to bring the message of Jesus. There he encountered so much hardship it is amazing he didn't abandon his mission and go home. But he stayed for over 40 years. One issue that tormented him was sati--the burning alive of widows when their husbands died. He would not rest until this practice was stopped. Facing insurmountable odds, he "plodded" on to influence the abolition of sati and to become the revered "Friend of India" and "Father of Modern Missions." ...a life dedicated to God and obedient to his calling can make a profound difference in the world. He oversaw more translations of the Bible than had been done in all previous Christian history combined. Life was never easy for Carey. But he simply refused to quit, even when a devastating fire destroyed years of his literary work. His legacy has inspired countless others from his own day to the present. William Carey shows dramatically how a life dedicated to God and obedient to his calling can make a profound difference in the world. ________________________________ Have you received Christ as your Lord and Saviour?
