Winner of Eleven Academy Awards

"A lavish, colorful spectacle that will linger long in the eye of the beholder." (New York Daily News), this cinematic masterwork tells the story of Ben-Hur (brilliantly portrayed by Charlton Heston), a Judean prince whose unjust arrest and enslavement culminates in a breathtaking chariot race, wherein he wreaks a shattering vengeance upon the Roman Tribune  who destroyed his family.  Winner of a record eleven Academy Awards (1959)--including Best Picture and Best Actor (Heston) --Ben-Hur "ranks in the very forefront of the great motion pictures of the screen's history." (Motion Picture Herald).

50,000 extras were hired for Ben-Hur, with 15,000 appearing in the chariot race sequence alone.  To feed this army, M-G-M built a special commissary which allowed the studio to feed 5,000 people in only 20 minutes.

Our Comments:

This fictional story about early followers of Christ has a strong Christian message.  One of Charlton Heston's best roles...this is an all-time Classic Film.

An interesting historical fact is that the book was written in the late 1800's by a man who had been Governor of New Mexico Territory.  While Governor, he had sent out Sheriff Pat Garrett to find Billy the Kid.
