Charlton Heston, Rex Harrison "Charlton Heston is Outstanding" -Variety Charlton Heston and Rex Harrison portray two of the Renaissance's most colorful figures in this historical drama based on Irving Stone's best-seller.
When Pope Julius II (Harrison) commissions Michaelangelo (Heston) to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, the artist initially refuses. Virtually forced to do the job by Julius, Michaelangelo later destroys his own work and flees Rome. Nominated for an Oscar® for Cinematography and named one of the year's best films by the National Board of Review, The Agony and the Ecstasy is a fascinating dramatization of the battle of wills behind one of the world's artistic masterpieces. ______________________ Comments of The Prayer Foundation: ™ Our first thought was: This is a good movie, but is this film qualified to even be on our website? There seems to be nothing Christian about it. Neither Michaelangelo nor the warrior Pope Julius II seem to have any interest whatsoever in Christian spirituality. The answer is: the art of the Sistine Chapel is Christian. Some of us have been blessed to view it in person in Vatican City, and it is indeed one the wonders of the world. Also, from a historical sense, Pope Julius II was one of the very lowest points of the Papacy (we are not throwing any stones, here, Roman Catholic historians agree on this), the last Pope before Martin Luther arrived on the scene. He shows very clearly some of the causes that led up _______________________________ |
to the occurrence of the Protestant Reformation. And, although not shown in the Movie, much later in life Michaelangelo did indeed become a Christian, in fact belonging to an underground Italian Protestant movement. _______________________________ The Agony and the Ecstasy DVD ... is available as a Free Gift to those making a contribution for the support of The Prayer Foundation ™.
