One Man Can Change the World

Throughout history, certain men have come forth to change its course, to decisively influence how society behaves and what it believes.  One such man was Martin Luther, the founder of the Protestant Reformation movement.  This dramatic Academy Award ® nominated feature film portrays the life of one of the most important men in history.

Luther, here bearded (to disguise himself), is in hiding for 10 months to escape death from those trying to kill him.  He spends the time translating the Bible into vernacular German so that the common people may read it for themselves.

This film traces the life of Martin Luther in the 16th century, his beliefs, his battles with the Roman Catholic hierarchy, and his vision.  Beginning with his life as a monk with the Order of St. Augustine, his reforming ideas about his faith and religion began to take shape.  Luther saw that men must live by faith, not dogma.  He could not see God as a condemning judge.  Burdened by guilt, Luther reiterated his beliefs in a monumental thesis of no indulgences.  Facing a growing hostility from a Rome he saw as increasingly deified, Luther clarified his positions and sought to remove the man-made errors that he felt existed in the church.  Climaxing with a dramatic debate and his eventual separation from the Church, this extraordinary film depicts not only Luther's life, but the diverse social and political forces at work in society at that time.       __________________________________
