A Handbook On How to Live the Christian Life

Suggestions for the Monks of the Knights of Prayer Monastic Order (and all other Christians!)

(Note: Before fasting, you should check with your Doctor.  Some persons should not fast: those who are sick, pregnant women, those with certain conditions like Diabetes, etc.  Persons in these situations can substitute by giving up something else.  For instance, on a "fast" day, you could give up an hour of television (or all television for that day); replacing it with extra Bible Reading and Prayer).

New Suggestions:

Fasting: going without food shows our dependence on God, brings us closer to God, supercharges our prayers.  Jesus said: 'When you fast...' (Matthew 6:16) ...not if you fast.  "But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.' (Mark 2:20).  'It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.' (Matthew 4:4).  Fasting is Lifetime Habit Number 8.

A Biblical "total" fast is water only.  When people in the Bible fasted , they would still drink water.  You should not go without water: this could do damage to your Kidneys.  The Bible says of Jesus' forty-day fast in the desert that "afterward he hungered"; never that he was thirsty.  A "partial" fast can also be very effective.  A "partial" fast could be giving up anything for a while.  Chocolate, desserts, red meat, all meat, drinks other than water.  John Wesley thought that his Methodist Pastors should fast until 5:00 at least one day a week.  The Bible does not require of Christians any specific times or amounts of fasting.

Memory Verses: Memorizing God's Word is Lifetime Habit Number 3!

Recommended Books: God's Chosen Fast by Arthur Wallis.

As you continue on your own, picking your own Memory Verses, we also recommend reading, So What's the Difference? by Fritz Ridenour (Comparative Religions/Cults).  What's the difference between Biblical Christianity and: Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses? For those who want further reading in this area, or if you need to learn about a particular Cult or group, we recommend Kingdom of the Cults by Walter Martin (Edited by Hank Hanegraaff).  This is an excellent reference work to have on hand so that you can look up different groups as needed.  Reading good Christian books is Lifetime Habit Number 4!

Recommended Movies: Just for fun (not required) watch another one of our recommended movies this month.
