Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably the most influential Christian writer of his day.

C. S. Lewis was a Professor of Medieval and Renaissence Literature at Oxford and Cambidge universities.

He wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year.

C. S. Lewis was the most popular and best-selling theologian of the entire Twentieth Century, an amazing fact considering that technically, he wasn't a Theologian at all, but an Oxford Professor of English Medieval and Renaissance literature!

His books include Mere Christianity, the Chronicles of Narnia fantasy series and the science fiction Space Trilogy are must reading for all Christians interested in these genres.  His most famous book among non-Christians would be The Screwtape Letters.

Though not all Christians are called to be a Christian Writer, we are all called by God to share our faith (witness) with those who are not Christians.  Some Bible verses that you will find helpful for doing this, and that you may want to commit to memory are found on other pages on our  web site (see: Memory Verses; 2nd Set: Salvation!, Plan of Salvation, and Statement of Faith). _________________

Book One:

Out of the Silent Planet

"This book has real splendor, compelling moments, and a flowing narrative."  ...The New York Times

"A delicious book, full of wisdom and savor."  ...Commonweal

The First Book in C. S. Lewis' acclaimed Space Trilogy begins the adventures of the remarkable Dr. Ransom.  Here, that estimable man is abducted and taken via spaceship to the red planet of Malacandra.  Once on the planet, he eludes his captors, risking his life and his chances of returning to earth.  First published in 1943, Out of the Silent Planet remains a mysterious and suspenseful tour de force from one of our best-loved writers.

Book Two:

Perelandra

"Writing of the highest order.  Perelandra is, from all standpoints, far superior to other tales of interplanetary adventures."  ...Commonweal

"Mr. Lewis has a genius for making his fantasies livable."  ...The New York Times

The second book in the trilogy continues the adventures of the extraordinary Dr. Ransom.  Pitted against that greatest of human weaknesses, temptation, the great man must battle evil on a new world--Perelandra--when it is invaded by the Devil's agent.  Will Perelandra succumb to the Devil's influence, or will it throw off the yoke of corruption and achieve spiritual perfection as yet unknown to man?  The outcome of Dr. Ransom's mighty struggle will alone determine its fate.

Book Three:

That Hideous Strength

"In his usual polished prose, the author creates an elaborate satiric picture of a war between morality and devilry."  ...The New Yorker

"Well-written, fast-paced satirical fantasy."  ...Time

The final book in the trilogy concludes the adventures of the matchless Dr. Ransom.  Finding himself in a world of scientific experiments run amok, Dr. Ransom struggles with questions of ethics and morality, applying age-old wisdom to a brave new universe dominated by science.  His quest for truth is a journey filled with intrigue and suspense. ______________________________

Our Comments:

"The enjoyment derived from these stories comes primarily from three causes: that they are written by one of the most brilliant and amazing minds of the last 100 years; that they are based on a Biblical view of the Universe; and that they let us feel as if we are actually on the wonderful worlds of Malacandra and Perelandra...actually meeting and living with their even more wonderful inhabitants.  I would like to say more, but don't want to give anything away to the first -time reader.  I have read and greatly enjoyed this spectacular Christian series four times."
