Edith Schaeffer, with her late husband, Dr. Francis Schaeffer, co-founded the well-known Christian community in Switzerland, L'Abri Fellowship.  The work of L'Abri began in the midst of their own young family in 1955 in the village of Huemoz, Switzerland.  Today L'Abri has six branches around the world - one each in Switzerland, England, Holland and Sweden and two in the United States.

Born of missionary parents while they were serving in China with the China Inland Mission under Hudson Taylor, Edith is the author of thirteen books on a variety of topics.  A resident of Rochester, Minnesota, she has four children, fifteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren.  She is active with L'Abri in Rochester, and is a speaker and counselor in the United States and abroad.    __________________

Though not all Christians are called to the ministry of Teacher, we are all called by God to share our faith (witness) with those who are not Christians.  Some Bible verses that you will find helpful for doing this, and that you may want to commit to memory are found on other pages on our  web site (see: Memory Verses; 2nd Set: Salvation!, Plan of Salvation, and Statement of Faith). _________________

Founding L'Abri Fellowship

In 1955, Francis and Edith Schaeffer left a Presbyterian Pastorate in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A., and founded L'Abri Fellowship in French Switzerland, a Christian Apologetics teaching and witnessing Community supported by "living by prayer" (they did not ask people for funding, but only prayed to God).  Francis and Edith Schaeffer wrote many excellent Christian books.

The Purpose of L'Abri

The Stated Purpose of L'Abri:

"To show forth by demonstration, in our life and work, the existence of God."

"What does L'Abri mean?  The word is simply French for "shelter."  L'Abri is a spiritual shelter for any in need of spiritual help--especially those seeking the answers to the basic philosophical problems with which all who care about finding a meaning or purpose in life have to struggle."

-Edith Schaeffer

L'Abri: French for "Shelter"

In 1955 an American family moved into a chalet on the side of a steep Swiss alp.  They did not know exactly why God had brought them there, what He wanted them to do, or even where the money to live on would come from.  But He began opening doors, and people with questions about life's meaning began finding the way to their home.

Edith Schaeffer, wife of Dr. Francis Schaeffer, tells the remarkable story of how God led them step by step, as that one small chalet grew into a whole community.  It took the name L'Abri (French for shelter).  Day by day, God faithfully provided for their family, and eventually for the entire community.

Truth Must Be Demonstrated As Well As Debated

The Schaeffers believed that truth must be demonstrated as well as debated.  They wanted to show the world through the transformed lifestyle of a believing community that the personal-infinite God is really here in our generation.  In a society losing the ability to distinguish between Christian and non-Christian values, truth and untruth, good and evil, L'Abri equipped people to make that distinction.

For more than thirty years, people have come to L'Abri from all walks of life and from many countries, searching for truth and reality.  There they find someone who cares for them personally, who listens carefully to their questions, and who gives them answers based on an uncompromising commitment to Biblical truth.  L'Abri now has branches in several other countries and has affected the lives of literally thousands of people around the world.  (-from the Back Cover). ______________________________

Foreword by Francis Schaeffer:

"This book and my books form a unity.  The work of L'Abri has two interrelated aspects.  First, there is the attempt to give an honest answer to honest questions--intellectually and upon a certain exegetical base.  My books, The God Who Is There, Escape from Reason, and Death in the City are directed to this aspect.

The second aspect is the demonstration that the Personal-Infinite God is really there in our generation.  When twentieth-century people come to L'Abri they are faced with these two aspects simultaneously, as the two sides of a single coin.  Now, in this book, the second side is presented."

Our Comments:

"This book is so wonderful because it shows the warmth and joy of actually living the Christian life, not just talking about it.  Francis and Edith Schaeffer's co-founding of L'Abri Fellowship is one of the major influences on Monk Linda and I co-founding The Prayer Foundation and the Knights of Prayer Monastic Order."
